Burundi president Domitien Ndayizeye attending a one-day regional summit 15 October 2004 in Nairobi. African leaders meeting at a regional summit in the Kenyan capital today postponed landmark elections in war-ravaged in Burundi and extended a period of transitional government due to end on November 1. "Based on the reality on the ground, the summit accepts that elections cannot take place before 1 November 2004" as envisaged in a power-sharing accord signed in 2000, read a communique released after the meeting of leaders overseeing Burundi's peace process.
